  1. The Story Behind Johnny Cash’s Middle Finger Photo
    03.18.11

The infamous photo of Johnny Cash flipping off the camera during his 1969 performance at San Quentin State Prison is one of, if not the most recognizable shots of a musician ever (right up there with Jim Morrison’s shirtless glare and Bob Marley leaning with a smile on). The photographer behind that classic shot, Jim Marshall, has now come forward with the story behind the image. He revealed to the San Francisco Art Exchange that Cash’s “fuck you” pose was in response to his own prompt, “John, let’s do a shot for the warden.” Throughout his career Cash often expressed his sympathies with those in the prison system so it’s little surprise that this photo expressed his thoughts about the man running the facility where he famously played for the inmates. Marshall has a book to go along with his revelation: he just released Pocket Cash which comprises select photos he had taken of the fairly recently deceased country legend.
